Research : VIDRC

The scientific activities of VIDRC are guided by a panel of experts headed by Prof. Rafi Ahmed from the Emory Vaccine Centre, USA. So far VIDRC has appointed 4 principal investigators and 4 research scientists. Their research activities are broadly focused in two areas: Tuberculosis, and viral infections. VIDRC is interested in developing a comprehensive research program on Tuberculosis vaccine development that includes studying the pathogen biology that may be relevant for the purpose. In the sphere of viral infections, VIDRC has initiated research on Dengue, Japanese encephalitis and Chikungunya viruses that are transmitted by mosquitoes and pose serious health hazard.

VIDRC is also a key partner in developing an oral rotavirus vaccine 116E produced by Bharat Biotech India Ltd., an Indian vaccine manufacturer.

The vaccine has successfully completed phase II study in children in India and is slated to undergo phase III trial in a large cohort of children in three cities of India.

VIDRC is to provide internationally validated laboratory assays for assessing the vaccine immunogenicity and efficacy.

Vision
To improve human health through research directed at the prevention, intervention, and therapy for infectious diseases that pose a serious threat to humanity.

Mission
To study infectious diseases and pathogens to generate translatable knowledge for developing prophylactic and therapeutic measures against diseases prevalent in India

Aims & Objectives

aerrowaerrow Conduct a comprehensive research program on pathogens, vaccines and other therapeutics (spanning basic through translational research)
aerrowaerrow Conduct population based studies on infectious diseases
aerrowaerrow Undertake product and process development including vaccine formulations and analytic research in partnerships with industry.
aerrowaerrow Clinical development of vaccine and therapeutics through phase I - III
aerrowaerrow Serve as a centre of excellence for training future researchers in the fields of science and technology relevant to the vaccine and infectious disease research

Functioning of VIDRC
VIDRC will establish national and international collaborations to achieve its objectives. VIDRC has set up collaboration with National Institute of Immunology (NII) and Delhi University South Campus (DUSC) in areas related to vaccine antigen discovery and new vaccine delivery vector development.

The centre has forged a partnership with the Society for Applied Studied (SAS) to conduct clinical development of vaccines in partnership with the Clinical Development Services Agency (CDSA).

VIDRC is looking to partner with international agencies involved in vaccine and infectious disease research, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), Centre for Disease Control (CDC), USA, Program for Appropriate Technologies in Health (PATH), BMG foundation, GAVI, and the National Institutes of Health, for R&D programs of mutual benefit.
